Dressing Tables for UAE Bedrooms: Size, Mirror, Light and Wood Explained
يشارك
Short answer: A sit-down dressing table needs about 1 m of wall, a top near 75 cm high and 60–75 cm of clear floor behind the stool. If the room is tight, a tall standing dressing unit such as the Opel Home Rune takes a 51 × 46 cm footprint. Either way, put the mirror where daylight falls on your face, not behind you.
- Sit-down table: 90–120 cm wide, about 75 cm high, with knee space and a stool.
- Standing unit: tall mirror and storage on a small footprint.
- Light: face the window or set the table at right angles to it.
Where should you put a dressing table in a UAE bedroom?
Put it where light reaches your face: facing a window, or on a wall at right angles to it. The common mistake is the one that looks tidiest on a floor plan: a dressing table against the window wall. You then sit with your back to the light, your face in shadow and bright glass glaring in the mirror.
Three UAE points decide the exact spot:
- Afternoon sun: keep a wooden top out of direct sun through west-facing glass, which changes the colour of wood finishes and heats whatever sits on top.
- Air conditioning: avoid the cold stream of a split AC unit; a constant draught dries wood and can open small gaps at the joints.
- En-suite steam: keep it out of the path of bathroom steam, which makes drawers swell and stick, even in solid wood.
After dark, light from both sides of the mirror at face height beats one ceiling light, which casts shadows under the eyes; see our guide to warm, modern lighting in Dubai homes.
What size dressing table do you need, and how much space does it take?
For a sit-down dressing table, plan on a top about 75 cm high, 90–120 cm wide and 40–50 cm deep, a stool seat 45–48 cm high, and 60–75 cm of clear floor behind the stool. That is roughly 1 m of wall and 1.1–1.2 m of depth from it.
| Option | Floor space | How you use it | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sit-down dressing table | About 90–120 × 45 cm, plus 60–75 cm for the stool | Seated, with knee space under the top | Larger bedrooms and dressing rooms |
| Standing dressing unit (Opel Home Rune) | 51 × 46 cm | Standing; tall mirror for outfits as well as make-up | Narrow walls, small bedrooms, the space beside a wardrobe |
| Chest of drawers with a table mirror | From 55 × 43 cm (Willow chest) | Standing, with drawers for storage | Rooms that need storage more than a seat |
| Wall mirror above a chest or console | Depth of the furniture below | Standing; mirror fixed at face height | A wall-mounted look without a floating shelf |
If the gap between bed and wall is under 1.1 m, a sit-down table blocks the walkway; choose a standing unit or a chest.
Sit-down dressing table or standing dressing unit: which suits you?
Choose a sit-down dressing table if you do make-up or hair seated every day and have floor for a stool. Choose a standing dressing unit if the wall is narrow, or you mainly need a mirror, storage and a view of the full outfit.
The Opel Home Rune is a standing dressing unit: solid rosewood, 51 cm wide, 46 cm deep and 184 cm tall, with a tall mirror above a drawer base. Its footprint is close to a bedside table's, so it fits beside a wardrobe or between a door and a window where a 1 m table would not. The base runs to the floor, so there is no knee space: stand at it, or sit side-on on a low pouf from the stool and pouf collection. It comes in honey and a deeper walnut finish.
The tall mirror also works as a full-length mirror; our full-length mirror guide covers sizes and safe placement.
Can a chest of drawers with a mirror, or a wall-mounted mirror, replace a dressing table?
Yes, for a standing routine. A chest of drawers with a table mirror on top, or a wall mirror above it, gives a dressing area with more storage than most dressing tables. You lose knee space, so it does not suit seated make-up.
A seated adult's face is roughly 110–125 cm from the floor and a standing adult's 150–170 cm, so the mirror should cover as much of that band as possible. The Opel Home Willow chest is 78 cm high; with the 80 cm Black square table mirror on it, the glass runs from 78 cm to about 158 cm. A wider chest leaves more room for trays and jewellery boxes: compare the chest of drawers collection and our chest of drawers buying guide.
A true wall-mounted dressing table is a shelf fixed into the wall. In a rented flat, check your tenancy contract before drilling for heavy fixings; a chest with a mirror needs no drilling and moves with you. For a fixed mirror, pick one from the wall mirror collection and hang its centre at the main user's eye level.
Which wood and finish suit a dressing table in the UAE?
Choose a dense solid wood with a sealed finish, and protect the top from what sits on it: perfume, nail-polish remover and hot styling tools mark a dressing table more than humidity does.
- Perfume and remover: alcohol and acetone can dull or lift a lacquered finish. Stand bottles on a glass or ceramic tray and wipe spills at once.
- Heat: never rest a hot straightener or curling iron on bare wood; use a heat-proof mat.
- Cleaning: wipe with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh liquids, as the Rune care note says.
Rosewood, used for the Rune, is a heavy hardwood with a fine grain; mango wood, used for the Willow, is lighter in colour and weight. Finish names describe colour, not species: honey and walnut are both rosewood. Opel Home's wooden furniture is solid wood, handcrafted in India and never MDF or veneer, which matters where AC-dried air meets humid air every time a door opens. Read why solid wood copes better than MDF in the UAE.
What should you check before you order a dressing table?
Check the wall, the light and the way you will use it.
- Wall width and depth: about 1 m and 1.1–1.2 m for a sit-down table with stool; 51 × 46 cm for the Rune.
- Height: the Rune is 184 cm tall; check for wall shelves, curtain pelmets or a wall-mounted AC unit above the spot.
- Light and power: window in front or to one side, out of afternoon sun, with a socket in reach for a hairdryer.
- Seated or standing: if you sit, you need knee space; a chest or a standing unit has none.
- Delivery and returns: the delivery time to your emirate, how you will pay, and the 72-hour return window.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard height of a dressing table?
Most sit-down dressing tables have a top about 75 cm from the floor, close to desk height, used with a stool whose seat is 45–48 cm high. Standing dressing units are much taller: the Opel Home Rune is 184 cm.
How much space do you need for a dressing table and stool?
Allow roughly 1 m of wall and 1.1–1.2 m from the wall: the table is 40–50 cm deep and the stool needs 60–75 cm of clear floor behind it. If the gap between your bed and the wall is smaller, choose a standing unit or a chest with a mirror.
Where should a dressing table be placed in a bedroom?
Facing a window, or on a wall at right angles to it, so daylight falls on your face. Avoid placing it with your back to the window, in direct afternoon sun, in the cold stream of an AC unit, or in the path of steam from an en-suite bathroom.
Can I use a chest of drawers as a dressing table?
Yes, if you get ready standing. Put a table mirror on top or hang a wall mirror above it at face height. A 78 cm chest with an 80 cm mirror covers roughly 78–158 cm from the floor. It has no knee space, so it does not suit seated make-up.
How do you protect a wooden dressing table from perfume and make-up?
Keep bottles on a glass or ceramic tray, wipe spills of perfume or nail-polish remover straight away, and never rest a hot styling tool on bare wood. Clean with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh liquids.
